There are a handful of things that can make a teacher very excited. Two of those things include Christmas and summer vacation! But on a serious note, there are those moments when you see the light go on. A student finally has that click where he understands something that seemed so confusing just moments before. I thrive on those kind of moments. It's completely gratifying to know I've succeeded in my quest to impart knowledge.
The other day, I was out to eat with my friend, Jody, and her three daughters. Her daughter, Molly, also happens to be one of my students. Jody and I were talking about moving to different places. Molly put in her opinion on one person moving to another area. I explained to her that the person had a house, and couldn't just move. She quickly suggested, "He should sell it for more than he paid for it. Then he'd get profit."
We'd been talking about free enterprise, and profit, and investors, and all kinds of things along those lines in our social studies lessons. In that moment, I think I was more happy than I've ever been as a teacher. There's something beyond imparting knowledge... seeing it applied.

It's nice to have personally had a hand in her education, however small and roundabout it was.
